It is believed that Vice Admiral Edward Vernon, England, used to mix different ingredients to serve his sailors while they traveled from England to America. Sailors were always given large amounts of lemons and limes to keep them hydrated and free from scurvy disease. However, this whiskey sour cocktail recipe got discovered ten years before this! In 1870, a Wisconsin newspaper published the first known reference to Whiskey Sour. Further research by different people revealed that the Universidad del Cuyo published a 1962 story claiming that Elliott Stubb, a man who invented the Whiskey Sour, had published it. Some believe that Jerry Thomas published the recipe in " The Bartender's Guide" in 1862. There are many versions of the history behind this drink. Many cocktails have had fascinating and legendary beginnings over the years, whether soldiers created them in World War II or by former presidents of the United States. The Whiskey Sour cocktail, unlike many other popular cocktails, has a humble origin, it's just a given name. Mixing ingredients is a common way to create cocktails. Bartenders still make their cocktails today by trying out everything possible and giving them a fun and exciting name. You don't have to mention that you mix it. For others, it is the only drink they will ever drink. Both are great reasons. Each to their own. How did it all happen? Here's a brief history of how this fantastic drink was created.
